Subject: mystery bandwidth loss at www.normandcompany.com
SCENE -- The outskirts of the internet Daphne: "My Uncle Paul's 'Stickman Murder Mystery Games' Website has been eating way to much bandwidth! Visitors to his mystery site are being scared away by all the lag. Some say, it is the work of the 'Bandwidth Vampire™'." Fred: "It looks like it is going to be up to us to solve this mystery, Gang! Shaggy: "Like, how're we ever going to find out who this Bandwidth Vampire™ is?" Velma: "Jinkies! Shaggy's right. It's impossible to eliminate any suspects!" Fred: "All right, Gang! Let's split up! Daphne, Velma come with me. We'll sift through the hit counters at Daphne's Uncle's hosting service CGI-BIN directory and look for clues. Shaggy, you and Scooby go search the file access logs at FTP Server IP: 64.240.29.227 of www.normandcompany.com, and compare file size with download transfer times." Scooby: (Shaking his head) "Ruh-ruh. Ro ray!" Daphne: "Would you do it for a Scooby Snack?" Scooby: (Shaking his head) "Ruh-ruh." Daphne: "Twoooo Scooby Snacks?" Scooby: (Nodding wildly) "Ro-kay." SCENE -- Junction between Primary and Secondary Nameservers: ns1.darkesthour.com and ns2.darkesthour.com Fred: "Keep your eyes peeled for clues!" (They do not notice the .JPEG portrait on the wall above. The eyes on the .JPEG portrait follow them as they walk.) Daphne: "But I'm not seeing anything unusual!" Velma: "Look at these apache logs! A 902kb-sized file labeled: "Sickman_Murder_Mystery/IMAG000/mystery.GIF" has been downloaded 54 times in the last hour alone! Fred: "But what does it mean?" Velma: "I dunno, but it could be - a clue!" Uncle Paul: "Am I in this mystery?" Fred: "No." SCENE -- Kitchen of FTP Server IP: 64.240.29.227 at www.normandcompany.com Shaggy: "Y'know, Scoob, those file access logs may be hidden in this refrigerator! Better look inside and make sure!" Scooby: "Rand the reazer!" Shaggy: "Oh, yeah! Better check the freezer too!" Scooby: "Rand the crooky rar...." Shaggy: "And the cookie jar...." Scooby: "Rand the randwidth rampire...." Shaggy: "And the Bandwidth Vampire™...." Scooby & Shaggy: "B...B...B...Bandwidth Vampire™!?!" Bandwidth Vampire™: "<Gggeeerrrrrrrrraaarrrrrrrrrr!!!>" (((Chase music plays as Scooby, Shaggy and the Bandwidth Vampire™ run in and out of the FTP Root directory of the murder mystery website. Further hijinks ensue until the Bandwidth Vampire™ trips over a block of buffer data causing a stack of kernal pages to crash and trap him. The gang eventually captures the Bandwidth Vampire™.))) Policeman Who Shows Up From Nowhere: "Well, it's a lucky thing you kids were here to solve this mystery! Otherwise he might have gotten away with it!" Fred: "Now... let's see who's really under this mask." Daphne: "Why, it's..." Everybody: "< '[IP number - 416.90.96.108] = www.Billy-Bear-Mystery.com .cass.net/~rainiew>'!?!"Policeman Who Showed Up From Nowhere: "The website: ' Billy-Bear-Mystery.com' !!! But why?!?"Velma: "Evidently the webmaster of 'Billy-Bear-Mystery.com' wanted to use a large graphic to decorate his murder mystery site. But large graphics use a lot of bandwidth. Daphne: "And bandwidth costs money." Fred: "So when the webmaster of 'Billy-Bear-Mystery.com' discovered that 'normandcompany.com' had a large graphic on one of its murder mystery game pages that was similar to the one he wanted - he changed 'Billy-Bear-Mystery.com' so that the GIF-file, containing the 902kb graphic, was downloaded from the 'normandcompany.com' server - rather then from his own. Shaggy: So, like, I get it! - He was paying for his groovy graphics with bogus bandwidth! 'Billy-Bear-Mystery.com': An ida got'n away wit it, too, if it weren't for you snooping kids!" Policeman Who Showed Up From Nowhere: "But what gave him away?" Fred: "Well, first we noticed that there were more requests for a specific ".GIF" file then there were visitors to that mystery page!" Shaggy: "But, like, how did that help to solve the mystery?" Scooby: "Ra - row rid rat relp?" Velma: "Simple! The Bandwidth Vampire™ used the IP number "416.90.96.108" - the same IP address that was accessing the "Gif file."Daphne: "From there, figuring out the rest was easy." Policeman Who Showed Up From Nowhere: "Well, www.normandcompany.com owes you kids a lot for solving this mystery. Is there anything they can do to repay you?" Velma: "Welllll, there - is - one thing..." SCENE -- Computer Room Shaggy: "Like, is it downloaded yet?" Fred: "Just a little bit more.... Got it!" Daphne: "It reads: 'Click HERE (or visit www.normandcompany.com) to play our latest cartoon mystery game for free." Velma: "It sure is swell of your Uncle to let us be the first people to play his new mystery game." Shaggy: "It's just like I always say... 'Where there's flash files, there's fire', eh, Scoob?" Scooby: "Ruh? Oh, reah. Roooby-dooby-doo!" ...Music and credits...
