You: "Hello, I'm the Detective who will be handling the case. What is your name again?"
Edward: "Edward Weiler.... Am I under arrest?"
You: "No. We just need to ask you a few questions. However I will not lie to you, Edward - It is possible, after my investigation is complete, that you might be arrested and charged with a crime. Are you sure you don't want to speak to a lawyer first?"
Edward: "Yes, I'm sure. I want to set the record straight."
You: "Very well. You were driving the truck at the time of the accident?"
Edward: "Yes."
You: "Were you alone."
Edward: "Yes."
You: "Have you consumed any alcohol in the last 24 hours?"
Edward: "Yes. I had one beer about an hour before the accident"
You: "Just the one beer? Did you have anything else?"
Edward: "No. Just the one beer. I had been driving all night and was lost. I stopped in at a bar to ask for directions."
You: "Do you remember the name of the bar?"
Edward: "No, I didn't ask. It was an out of the way dive. I ordered just one beer and asked the bartender for directions. He obliged and I finished my beer. As I was leaving, some stupid drunk lady spilled her drink on my shirt."
You: "Is that why you smell like whisky?"
Edward: "I guess. I was hoping that the smell would have dissipated by now."
You: "Please continue."
Edward: "Anyway - I left the bar and drove off. An hour later I was lost again."
You: "Tell me about the accident."
Edward: "I was driving down a dark road next to some woods, trying to find Highway 55. I'll admit that I was in a hurry, but I was still driving below the speed limit. ahead of me I could see a car at the side of the road. When I got closer I could see that it was a police car. By the time I saw the man laying in the road it was too late."
You: "Officer Kunark was laying in the road?"
Edward: "Yes. On his back... with his head close to the middle of the road.
You: "Why was he in the middle of the road?"
Edward: "I don't know."
You: "What happened after you noticed Officer Kunark in the road?"
Edward: "I slammed on the brakes - but the road was very slick and I slid about 50 yards before coming to a complete stop. I got out and ran over to the body..."
(Edward suddenly looks very ill.)
"...When I got there his ...his head had been crushed. I ran back to the truck and used my cell-phone to call 911."
You: "When Officer Lunk arrived on the scene - what happened?"
Edward: "He called on his radio to make sure that an ambulance was coming. Then he asked me what had happened. I told him and then he asked me to take a breathalyzer test. After I took the test he waited until another policeman came and he had me take another breathalyzer test with a different machine. He then said that I had to leave my truck at the scene, but that he would give me a ride in his car."
You: "Did you tell Officer Lunk about the woman who spilled whisky on you?"
Edward: "No... It didn't come up."
You: "O.K. Edward. I think I have all the information that I need. I'm not placing you under arrest. However, I would appreciate if you stayed here for now."
Edward: "Sure."
You: "Thank you for your help."
Edward: "You're welcome."
You enter the room and find a man waiting for you. He looks very nervous.
There is a distinct odor of whisky in the air.
